Health Insurers Agree to 60-Day Rate Hike Delay

Several California health insurance companies announced that they will agree to delay planned rate hikes for 60 days. The delays come after state Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones asked the companies for time to review the increases.

People with Individual Policies Avoid Hikes for Now

Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and PacifiCare have all agreed to delay their hike increases for people with individual policies while the commissioner takes time for review them.

Anthem had planned to increase rates on April 1 by an average of 9.8 percent for 683,000 individual policyholders in California.

Regulatory Reform and Advertising

I was lucky enough to hear Benjamin Gentry, (a graduate student in the Communication, Culture and Technology program at Georgetown University) speak at last year’s ACLI Legal and Compliance Section Conference. We have continued a dialog about issues related to insurance advertisements and social media. We are both preparing to speak at separate engagements in April and it has been helpful to bounce ideas off each other. He recently sent me this NYT article from November 2010.

As I read it, I couldn’t help but think of the many ways in which the social media management technology, as discussed in the article, could (and should) lead to changes in the way insurance advertising is regulated by state insurance departments. Muc

Don’t be snowed- if you cause a crash, you are at fault

When a news reporter quips, “The accident is being blamed on the recent snow storm…” it always gets a chuckle out of me. If you are in an accident, and did the hitting, you are at fault. Road conditions certainly play a role in many accidents, but it is up to you as the driver to adapt to those conditions and safely operate your car. Ping An of China 2010 Premium Income Topped CNY200bn

Ping An Insurance (Group) Company of China Ltd. (SHSE: 601318, SEHK: 2318) recorded more than CNY 226.56 billion in premium revenue in 2010 in terms of the standards prior to new accounting principles, according to an announcement it posts on January 18.
